Duomo di Milano – Milans’s iconic landmark

I and four of my roommates went on a month long Euro-trip covering Switzerland, Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands and Germany after completing Mechanical Engineering at McMaster University, Canada. Since we all wanted to have a real backpacking experience, we booked best possible hostels, apartments and rental cars to cover as much of Europe as we possibly could.

When I look back and think about how much fun we had in Europe, I am so glad I decided to go on that trip before starting the next chapter of my life. I urge all students to save some money during their college lives and explore the world. Travelling with a free state of mind during your student life can be a life changing experience. I don’t remember how many straight A’s I got in college, but I can never forget the crazy things we did in Europe.

After relaxing on sunny beaches of Barcelona, Spain, we travelled through Italy. Besides enjoying delicious pizzas, pastas and countless plates of tiramisu, we drove across Italy and explored Rome, Pisa, Florence, Cinque Terre and Lake Como before heading to Milan.

Often referred to as the fashion capital of the world, the beautiful city of Milan also offers a number of marvellous gems when it comes to art and architecture. The Duomo di Milano also known as the Milan Cathedral is certainly one of the most exquisite pieces of art in the world.

Did you know that it took around six centuries and thousands of workers to build the cathedral? Due to its immense structure, it has topped the charts of largest cathedrals in Italy. In fact, Duomo di Milano is the fifth largest Christian church in the whole world. The Duomo has 52 pillars and is decorated by around 3500 statues (more than any other building in Europe).

If you are not already mesmerised by the intricate interior of the Duomo di Milano, wait till you go up the roof. The terrace is easily accessible by the stairs or the lift. You can take a close look at fascinating details of the statues on the terrace or simply enjoy the breath-taking view of the city.
